What I did while in France

For the most of my summer, I was living in France. I studied printmaking, a longtime love of mine. I spent over two months working with my hands, getting inky and working with a press. Visit this site to see the many prints I generated during this time.

Handset Type Workshop

caterpillar book

Here is an image of the book I helped make at the AIGA Baltimore/Lead Graffiti workshop a couple of weeks ago. To read more, check out these two posts (and thanks to Ray Nichols for this photo.)

Photopolymer Workshop

Last weekend was the Photopolymer Workshop by AIGA Baltimore and Typecast Press. Mary Mashburn, of Typecast gave a tour of the shop while going over letterpress history. Then she showed the magic of creating a photopolymer plate. Each participant go to print their own Baltimore themed postcard design, and they then did a print exchange at the end. Everyone got to work on the two Vandercook presses, and a good time was had by all.

AIGA Baltimore Letterpress Series

 Letterpress Series

Just thought I would let you all know that I am running a Letterpress Series.

Printing with your bottlejack press

As you may have seen, I built a printing press with a hydraulic jack. I thought it might be helpful to those of you building your own presses, if you have a printing how-to for a hydraulic jack press.

Putting "Community" into Design

Did you miss AIGA Baltimore’s Bernard Canniffe Lecture the last week? If so, you missed quite an inspiring night. Here are some notable quotes from the man himself:

two posters advertising the lecture

Design for the community will be one of the most important things in the future.”

You can do it!

As part of Stevenson University’s portfolio review this semester, I was asked to speak for a few minutes to the students tomorrow, so here is what I plan to talk about.

The economy will always have its ups and downs, but graphic designers can still find their way. Here are some tips for the new graduates for 2010.

AIGA Create Don't Hate

Last October, AIGA Baltimore sponsored Create Don’t Hate with Worldstudio. This was a mentoring program for high school students in the Baltimore area. Graphic designers were matched up with students interested in visual arts from Patapsco and Patterson high schools. The groups worked together to create posters that later on could become billboards throughout the city. The program lasted four weeks, with students and mentors meeting once a week.
