AIGA Baltimore Letterpress Series

 Letterpress Series

Just thought I would let you all know that I am running a Letterpress Series.

Printing with your bottlejack press

As you may have seen, I built a printing press with a hydraulic jack. I thought it might be helpful to those of you building your own presses, if you have a printing how-to for a hydraulic jack press.

Putting "Community" into Design

Did you miss AIGA Baltimore’s Bernard Canniffe Lecture the last week? If so, you missed quite an inspiring night. Here are some notable quotes from the man himself:

two posters advertising the lecture

Design for the community will be one of the most important things in the future.”

You can do it!

As part of Stevenson University’s portfolio review this semester, I was asked to speak for a few minutes to the students tomorrow, so here is what I plan to talk about.

The economy will always have its ups and downs, but graphic designers can still find their way. Here are some tips for the new graduates for 2010.

AIGA Create Don't Hate

Last October, AIGA Baltimore sponsored Create Don’t Hate with Worldstudio. This was a mentoring program for high school students in the Baltimore area. Graphic designers were matched up with students interested in visual arts from Patapsco and Patterson high schools. The groups worked together to create posters that later on could become billboards throughout the city. The program lasted four weeks, with students and mentors meeting once a week.

Michael Bierut's Life as a Font

Last week, I listened to Michael Bierut present “My Life as a Font” at a UMBC/AIGA Baltimore event. He worked his way through the alphabet, showcasing a project for each letter and discussing the typeface used. But what I really enjoyed hearing were all the lessons he seemed to pick up along the way.

Redefining ‘Sustainable’

Katie McKenna Daniels is trying to save the planet one sustainable design at a time. As the design director for Vermilion Design in Boulder, Colorado, she created logos for Noodles & Company, Bingham Hill and the CU Art Museum of the University of Colorado, and it was at Vermilion that she learned the importance of reducing her clients’ environmental impact. She recently relocated to Maryland and started her own business, McKenna Daniels Design.

20 Apps for Designers

I recently got a new iPod and realized there are some good and fun apps out there for design, so I thought I would share some that I came across in my search.
